Monday Madness – 3/10/25

Another week starting and another day started by sell-offs. With the current administration in the White House changing the winds in the sails of financial markets daily and occasionally multiple times during the day, the market is reacting how it typically does with uncertainty.

With uncertainty comes sell-offs, and with sell-offs comes turmoil, and turmoil could lead to a recession. The Jobs report was lackluster and the prices of groceries have not gone down. 401K’s are down because of the market. The S&P and QQQ are down because of this uncertainty, and the one financial tool that we thought would be up and safe, is down in lows we haven’t seen since November 2024.

Yes, that precious bitcoin has been in the lows as the lack of transparency and lack of follow up with new crypto regulation has left in hanging in the unknow.

I know most of this is daunting, especially when we all have worked so hard to build our portfolios into what they are today. The good news, administrations are only 4 to 8 years long, and we plan on being in the market for a very long time. We will see many administrations and many changes/swings to the market, but one thing will stay constant. We will keep buying!

That’s the thrifty investor. Times are tough, we’re already used to picking up shares at bargain prices and finding new stocks to get into while the market is down and cheap. This is what it means to be thrifty. we survive the turmoil because we don’t invest with money we don’t have. We don’t invest with rent money, and we buy great companies at bargain prices.

So, if you need a helpful reminder today and this week to stay strong, don’t sell, read this as many times as it takes.

“I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful.” Warren Buffett

Financial Friday – 3/7/25

What do we think the direction of the market will be in today? The VIX appears to be on a downward trend for the 5-day, tariffs are being delayed, and Bitcoin is still under $90,000 a coin.

What does this all mean? I believe it looks like Market Uncertainty. The market is uncertain in what direction it will go, what is the next shoe to drop, and what sector is going to be hit next?

With decisions changing daily and sometimes inter-day, it’s hard to know where your investment is going. So lets remember something extremely important about the market.

Mr. Market in the long run, is happy. Mr. Market, over time, shows average increases of 10% a year. So what does that mean? It means over the long term, markets rise, but in the short term, Mr. Market can be all over the place. This gives us an advantage.

With Mr. Market in turmoil or indecision, we can scoop up shares of companies we love or want at attractive prices. This is the best part of being a value investor. We don’t chase prices, we wait for them to fall. So this all screams out to me, be patient!

Then Warren Buffett’s quote comes to mind. “Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful.”

What is your outlook on the market?

Thrifty Thursday – 3/6/25

Thursday is for staying thrifty! How do you stay thrifty? Do you budget? Do you keep up with paying on your credit cards weekly or monthly? Are you taking advantage of the credit card points? What else are you taking advantage of?

We often say on this site, make your money work for you. Your money needs to make more money. And it’s not going to make more money sitting in your checking and savings accounts from your local bank. You need to search further in order to get a return on your money.

Thrifty Ideas for Investing:

Buying Bonds, Bills, and Notes from the U.S. Treasury. These are generally safe investments, and although they may not generate a “sexy” return, it’s still better than letting your money get eaten away by inflation while sitting in your account, generating 0.1%-1% interest. (Most of the time it’s quarterly compounding interest in your savings account, instead you could be earning monthly compounding interest)

Buying ETFs is another option of being thrifty. You can get a basket of stocks or mimic a sector of the market. There are a myriad of ETFs you could look into. Reflecting almost any interest or sector you might want!

High-Yield Savings Accounts. This is one that has been a huge hit lately. Park you cash and generate high interest on it, compounding monthly. Right now you can find accounts in the 4.1% interest range, but some, like OpenBank are around 4.65%.

What are your best ways to generate money from your money?

Wednesday – Do Tariffs Matter To You? 3/5/25

Hello on this middle weekday called Wednesday. Will the market recover today and stabilize, or will further turmoil be felt due to these tariffs? Do tariffs cause you any headaches for your business?

What do you know about tariffs? Do they affect you? Do you pay any attention to the tariffs that are being put in place. It seems that this morning the market is slightly recovering due to the news of tariffs possibly being delay or changed.

With all of this affecting the market, are you keeping some dry powder for a recession, correction, or bear market?

It’s hard to wake up and see red, especially when it has been consistent. The new administrator keeps the market on its toes, causing it to swing up one day and down the next. Same for the crypto market.

Just keep in mind, Thrifty Readers! These are the moments that we stay strong, don’t sell, and keep on buying! I need a t-shirt that says “Just keep buying!”

How do you stay motivated? What are your concerns of tariffs?

Tuesday Turmoil – 3/4/2025

Monday had a decent sell off and not just on the stock exchanges. If you hold crypto or keep track of cryptocurrency, you would notice the drastic drop after it reclaimed numbers in the $90,000+ per coin.

There are a lot of factors that influence the direction of the market. And right now, there seem to be a lot of factors hitting at the same time. With war and other geo-political issues, tariffs, and high interest rates, is right now a good time to invest?

Well, over here at Thrifty Investing, we always think it’s a good time to invest. The best thing that could happen is a market drop or decline, because that is when we find the best deals. Buying companies at discounted prices is what we’re here for. Thrifty. We want to be able to buy a companies shares for pennies on the dollar, just like we do when we go shopping for clothes and other items at thrift stores or discount stores.

Given all the issues that are currently affecting the economy and financial markets, it’s a ripe time to get in. Keep an eye out for the PCE and CPI numbers that come from the Fed, and always keep an eye on the VIX. The VIX helps determine how investors are feeling about the market and current conditions.

If these numbers go in the opposite direction that the Fed would like it to, it may lead to further declines and possibly a crash. Keep some dry powder to pickup shares at a discount!

What or where do you look, to get an overview of the market’s feelings?

Monday

Monday. Market opening at 9:30am. Are you buying or selling any stock today? Are you buying a new position? Are you adding to a position? Are you selling your shares of a company because they’ve changed and you no longer feel like it’s a good match?

Switching topics, I wonder what the Crypto Strategic Reserve will do for the price of Bitcoin. Will is cause it to go up or down, and why?

I know the U.S. Government holds Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency, but I don’t believe it adds any value as it’s not able to be used by the government.

What could a reserve do for our national debt? What could it do regarding the strength of the dollar? Will it implore criminals to use cryptocurrency even more?

I don’t have these answers, but these are questions I have on this Monday. I’ll be spending some time today to find my own answers, but if you feel you know what the answers are, please comment below!

Where Do You Look Before You Buy?

When I am buying stocks, the first place I look is the 52 Week Low list for the NYSE and Nasdaq. If any of my owned stocks are on that list, they’re getting a buy. The only reason why I wouldn’t is if it was too much of my portfolio and if my average cost wouldn’t be affected. Also, I wouldn’t buy if something changed with the company and I no longer wished to own it.

Once I’m done checking out the 52 Week Low list, I check out Low P/E and Low P/B ratios and check to see if any of my stocks are on that list as well.

I also have a list of “look Into” stocks that come across as interesting. It allows me time to investigate the company, look at financials, and then look at P/E as well. If the planets align, it gets a buy, and I start acquiring shares.

I typically purchase shares or fractional shares once a week and typically on Friday.

When do you buy and where do you look to get your buying ideas from?

What Are You Waiting For?

I’m not sure how you got to our site, but we have a big question for you!

What Are You Waiting For?

Are you in the market? Are you an investor? What do you own? Stocks, Bonds, Real Estate?

Do you have a 401K? Do you have a Roth IRA or any other Retirement product?

If you answered no to any of these, or worse, said no to all of these, you need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and then exhale.

Get into the market. Buy the S&P from Fidelity or Vanguard. Buy Bonds, Bills, and Notes from the U.S. Treasury. Find a High-Yield Cash Account to park your cash. Find an app that can help you with all of these things.

On this site, you’ll see that we mention many apps, many times, and that’s because of the life-changing benefits they each have on our lives. Webull, SoFi, Public, M1, Fidelity, Coinbase, and Fundrise are the apps we have used and strongly encourage you all to try them out if you haven’t before.

WDC – SNDK – Spin-Off

It finally happened! The WDC (Western Digital) spin-off has finally completed and if you check your brokerage account that owns WDC, you might see something extra. SNDK!

One of my favorite events that happen in the investing world are spin-offs. I have a few stocks in different portfolios that have other upcoming spin-offs, but I was very excited for this one.

I’ve been using WDC hard drives (HDD and SSD) since I began building PCs in my younger years. They were and I think still are, top of the line when it comes to quality in the hard drive, solid state drive world. So when I learned that just owning WDC, you would be getting a piece of their spin-off, SanDisk , I had to jump on the opportunity.

Spin-offs are a great way to bring a piece of a company forward that might be profitable and possibly overlooked by the more memorable parts of the company. Shed the old skin of HDD’s with platters and mechanical pieces, and let the solid state and flash memory shine!

Upcoming spin-offs:

UL will spin off their ice-cream brand, Ben & Jerry’s.

Comcast – Spinning off cable networks, including CNBC.

Let us know what upcoming spin-offs you’re paying attention to or excited about!

SpinCo – Spin-Off Companies

Hello and welcome back to Thrifty Investing!

As an investor, do you have any niches you like to participate in, such as Stock Splits, Mergers, Acquisitions, or SpinCo’s?

I am a big fan of getting something for having something. Getting a piece of the new company, just for holding shares of the original company. It’s a reward for buying and holding.

Given some evidence, especially in “You Can Be A Stock Market Genius”, Spin-Offs, can be very profitable. Especially once the spin-off completes. The typical purpose of the spin-off is to bring forward a piece of the company that shines, but has been buried under debt from the original company, or it has been overlooked because of the many different companies that might be under the umbrella of the original.

Once these companies spin-off, it allows that company to shine. The new company may not be burdened by large amounts of debt any more and becomes attractive to investors.

When you’re holding the original company, typically you’ll get shares of the new company once the spin-off is completed.

The next upcoming SpinCo I have that will be performing the spin-off, is WDC, Western Digital. They are spinning off and splitting their two different memory styles into two different companies. I definitely want a piece of the new company that will be focusing on Flash Memory and SSD.

The next one I’ll be verifying is UL. They are spinning off Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to be it’s own public company. Who doesn’t love B&J?

What spin-off are you excited for? I am curious on what will happen with the SpinCo for Comcast. Let us know below which spin-off’s you’re looking into!
